Electric motors are pivotal in electricity consumption, constituting around 65% of industrial electricity use globally. To mitigate this substantial usage, the EU enforces stringent legal standards on the efficiency of electric motors produced within or imported into its territory.
Today, the regulations encompass three-phase, single-speed asynchronous motors-the most prevalent type-responsible for 90% of electricity consumption in motors ranging from 0.75 to 375 kW.
These standards categorize energy efficiency classes as IE1, IE2, IE3, and IE4, with IE4 representing pinnacle efficiency.
The Ecodesign Committee mandated a standard revision in 2019, which was subsequently published on October 1, 2019. The following stipulations are now in effect:
Motors with 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-poles ranging from 0.75 to 1000 kW (an extension from the previous 375 kW) must conform to efficiency class IE3.
Motors in the range of 0.12 to 0.75 kW are required to meet efficiency class IE2.
The past provision allowing IE2 motors with frequency drives to replace IE3 motors has been eliminated.
For 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-pole motors ranging from 0.12 to 1000 kW, efficiency class IE2 is mandatory for Ex eb certified motors, ensuring high safety.
Single-phase motors exceeding 0.12 kW fall under the IE2 efficiency classification.
The elevated efficiency class IE4 is applicable to 2, 4, and 6-pole motors within the 75 to 200 kW range.
Inverters used with electric motors from 0.12 to 1000 kW must achieve the specially designated IE2 efficiency class for inverters.
Since June 16, 2011, electric motors below energy efficiency class IE2 cannot be marketed or put into service within the EU.
As of January 1, 2015, motors in the 7.5 to 375 kW range (2-, 4-, and 6-pole) must fulfill IE3 requirements or IE2 if paired with frequency inverters for speed control, offering two compliance paths.
From January 1, 2017, regulations tightened: all motors from 0.75 to 375 kW (2-, 4-, and 6-pole) must meet IE3 standards, or IE2 if integrated with frequency inverters.
Our electric motors are meticulously designed for operation exclusively in specialized conditions:
Our specialized engines are crafted specifically for use in ships or other transport means carrying goods or people. If used in a mobile conveyor capacity on land and ships, standard rules apply.
Note: Existing motors being repaired and not significantly altered are exempt from requirements unless the repair is extensive enough to render them effectively new.
For motors destined for export beyond Europe, our specific requirements do not apply, offering flexibility in international markets.
Specialized requirements are in place for water-cooled motors, ensuring they meet the necessary operational standards.
