Electric motors are pivotal in global energy consumption, accounting for a significant portion of electricity usage. In the industrial sector worldwide, they represent roughly 65 percent of electricity consumption. To mitigate this, stringent legal efficiency standards govern the production and import of electric motors within the EU.
Today, the requirements encompass three-phase, single-speed asynchronous motors. Asynchronous motors, being the predominant motor type, consume 90 percent of the electricity utilized by all electric motors in the 0.75 - 375 kW range.
Under these standards, energy efficiency classes are categorized as IE1, IE2, IE3, and IE4, with IE4 epitomizing the pinnacle of efficiency.
In 2019, the Ecodesign Committee sanctioned a revision of the standard, which was promulgated on October 1, 2019. The following stipulations apply:
Motors with 2-, 4-, 6-, or 8-poles within the 0.75 - 1000 kW range (previously capped at 375kW) are now classified under efficiency class IE3.
Motors ranging from 0.12 - 0.75 kW must comply with the efficiency standards set by class IE2.
Notably, the previous option to substitute IE3 motors with an IE2 motor employing a frequency drive is no longer permissible.
The efficiency class IE2 now extends to Ex eb certified motors with high safety for 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-pole motors spanning 0.12 - 1000 kW.
Single-phase motors exceeding 0.12 kW are now encompassed within the corresponding IE2 class.
The elevated efficiency class IE4 is applicable to motors with 2, 4, and 6 poles in the 75 - 200 kW range.
Frequency inverters intended for electric motors with outputs from 0.12 - 1000 kW must conform to the IE2 efficiency class, specifically designed for inverters.
As of June 16, 2011, placing electric motors below energy efficiency class IE2 on the market or servicing them in the EU is prohibited.
From January 1, 2015, electric motors ranging from 7.5 - 375 kW (2-, 4-, and 6-pole) must either meet IE3 requirements or IE2 if paired with frequency inverters for speed regulation, offering two compliance pathways.
Since January 1, 2017, regulations have intensified requiring all motors between 0.75 - 375 kW (2-, 4-, and 6-pole) to adhere to IE3 standards, or IE2 when used with frequency inverters.
Our electric motors are specifically crafted for exclusive operations designed to meet your unique needs.
Our product requirements are specialized and do not apply to engines for ships or other transport means, ensuring tailor-made engines specifically crafted for these purposes.
Exclusions apply to motor repairs unless refurbishment renders the product essentially brand new, ensuring compliance with the latest standards.
When exporting motors beyond European borders, rest assured that our product requirements do not apply, offering you global flexibility.
Distinctive requirements are in place for water-cooled motors, ensuring optimal performance and adaptability.
