Electric motors represent a significant fraction of global electricity usage. Specifically, they account for approximately 65 percent of the electricity consumed in industrial sectors worldwide. To mitigate this substantial energy demand, the EU has implemented stringent legal requirements mandating the efficiency levels for electric motors manufactured or imported within its jurisdiction.
Currently, the regulations encompass three-phase, single-speed asynchronous motors, which dominate the market as the most prevalent type of motor. These motors are responsible for about 90 percent of all electric motor energy consumption within the power spectrum of 0.75 - 375 kW.
The energy efficiency of these motors is categorized into classes IE1, IE2, IE3, and IE4, with IE4 representing the pinnacle of efficiency.
The Ecodesign Committee's 2019 decision resulted in a revised standard, published on October 1, 2019, establishing new stipulations as follows:
Motors featuring 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-pole configurations, within the range of 0.75 - 1000 kW, have been elevated to efficiency class IE3, expanding from the previous limit of 375kW.
Motors with power ratings between 0.12 - 0.75 kW are now required to comply with efficiency class IE2.
The prior option allowing replacement of IE3 motors with IE2 motors paired with frequency drives is no longer permissible.
Motors with 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-pole variants, spanning 0.12 - 1000 kW, must now also meet IE2 efficiency standards, inclusive of Ex eb certified motors known for their superior safety.
Single-phase motors exceeding 0.12 kW must adhere to the IE2 efficiency classification.
The elite efficiency class IE4 is designated for 2-, 4- and 6-pole motors ranging between 75 - 200 kW, marking the forefront of energy efficiency.
Frequency inverters, designed for motors with power capacities from 0.12 - 1000 kW, must now achieve efficiency class IE2, tailored specifically for inverter technology.
Since June 16, 2011, it has been strictly prohibited to market or commission electric motors below energy efficiency class IE2 within the EU.
From January 1, 2015, electric motors within 7.5 - 375 kW, encompassing 2-, 4-, and 6-pole types, were mandated to meet IE3 or alternatively meet IE2 if coupled with frequency inverters for regulated speed control, offering a dual compliance pathway.
By January 1, 2017, regulations further tightened, requiring all motors from 0.75 - 375 kW, inclusive of 2-, 4-, and 6-pole configurations, to conform to IE3 standards, or alternatively IE2 when integrated with frequency inverters.
Our electric motors are specifically intended for exclusive operations in challenging environments:
Designed with versatility in mind, these requirements do not apply to ships or other transport means, where specialized engines are necessary. If used on both ship and land, the rules stand.
Our requirements exclude the repair of motors previously in the market unless the repair renders them essentially new.
For motors exported outside Europe, our stringent requirements are not applicable, offering flexibility in international markets.
Specialized requirements apply to our advanced water-cooled motors, ensuring efficient performance.
